Smith Point Anchorage

We had 6 boats register for this event and three turned out for the cruise.

Two sailing vessels, Felina and Awakening, arrived at Smith Point on Saturday morning and were able to make good anchorage in around 6 feet of water near the areas indicated as the Vingt et Un islands on the charts. The islands appear to have been washed away as there is no evidence of any land above the waterline and M/V Tricia II was able to anchor in the area designated as one of the islands. In any case the anchorage seems widely available to vessels drafting up to 6 feet and for all winds not coming from the west. Although the charts indicate shallower water, 6 feet of depth was observed well into the point area.

The weather was extremely hot but all crews enjoyed some time in the water. In the end it was too hot for vessels not having operating air conditioning to remain the night. The two sailing vessels returned to port on Saturday evening. Tricia II remained on the water through the night but repositioned to a new anchorage when wind shifted from the west.

We recommend that the club return to Smith Point when the weather gets a bit more mild.
