The Ghost Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the seventh lunar month. A solemn holiday, the Hungry Ghost Festival represents the connections between the living and the dead, earth and heaven, body and soul. Activities of the festival include preparing ritual offerings of food, and burning ghost money (or paper money) to please the visiting ghosts and spirits as well as deities and ancestors. Other activities include burying and releasing miniature paper boats and lanterns on water, which signifies "giving directions to the lost ghosts."

Freeport Triangle Offshore/ICWW Cruise
Expand your offshore and coastal cruising experience and join us as we execute the Freeport Triangle. Although primarily a sailing cruise, there are some blue-water powerboats that should join along. This cruise will check the cruising boxes for overnight anchoring, offshore navigating, marina tie up, ICWW navigating. We may even have a fishing (trolling) tournament added it for fun.
Head to Galveston Friday (8/25) afternoon. You have a number of anchor/tie up options. We will depart from the Galveston ship channel (near marker #11) Saturday at sunrise (0700) and head offshore and down to Freeport. We'll spend the night at one of the two marinas (Bridge Harbor, Surfside) on the ICWW. We return up the ICWW on Sunday (8/27). The return leg should be about 41nm back to Pelican Island.
To expand your charting and navigation experience, I am including a waypoint 21nm (heading 50 deg) off the Galveston coast to pass by and then 32 no (heading 130 deg) down to the Freeport channel entrance. Total offshore distance (jetty-jetty) is approximately 53nm. Averaging 6 kts, offshore sail should take around 10 hrs. We have about 13hrs of sun-up time so we should be good.
One of the goals of this cruise is to expand your offshore experience. If the wind is light, then motor sailing would be appropriate. If the wind and waves are a little too brisk, I will probably delete or move the offshore waypoint so we aren't beating upwind too long (or at all).
